The Zika virus, a mosquito-borne infection linked to birth defects in Brazil has made its way to Florida. Un-rimmed tires hold rain water and, as such, serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. In an effort to reduce mosquito breeding grounds, the Solid Waste Management Division is providing a free tire disposal day
This is a part of the Department of Health Zika Response Plan. Citrus County residents, in assessed and non-assessed properties can dispose of tire sizes including passenger and pick-up tires, without rims, at the Citrus County Central Landfill, free of charge. Mosquito Control will assist the Landfill if necessary by spraying collected tires to prevent mosquito breeding until tires are properly disposed of and recycled.
Saturday, January 13th 2018 from 8:00 AM till 2:30 PM. This event is co-sponsored by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
The Central Landfill is located at 230 W Gulf to Lake Highway (SR44) in Lecanto. FL 34461.
This event applies only to residential customers and only passenger car and pickup truck-size tires will be accepted. This event does not include oversized or business tires.
