American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding Class to be offered

Citrus County Parks and Recreation is offering the American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding class January 2 through 5, 2019. A waterfront certification is ideal for lifeguards looking to work at non-surf, open-water environments such as lakes and rivers, as well as traditional pools. The prerequisite class will be on December 21, 2018 from 1pm to 4pm. The cost of the class is $175.00 per person. You must be at least 15 years of age. Citrus County is accepting applications for the Planning and Development Commission

The Citrus County Department of Planning and Development is accepting applications for the Planning and Development Commission (PDC).  Two regular positions are expiring on January 31, 2019.  The new term begins at the first PDC meeting in February (2/7/19).  Terms are for 4 years.

This Board reviews development applications and makes recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners on changes to the Citrus County Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code.  The PDC has final action on Variance and Conditional Use applications.  The PDC also provides direction to staff regarding land use amendments as well as text amendments on development issues.

Santa Coming to Citrus County Libraries

Every year in December Santa Claus makes a special trip down from the North Pole to visit the Citrus County Library System. Each branch is doing something unique for the visit. 

Santa’s first stop will be on Thursday December 6th at the Coastal Region Branch from 10:30am to 11:30am. There will be no shortage of songs and stories; children can make a craft and receive a special surprise. Santa will be available to listen to wishes and take photos.

On Tuesday December 11th at the Lakes Region Branch from 6pm to 7pm Santa will be attending a special “Stories with Santa”, featuring holiday stories and songs. Children will enjoy constructing a craft and receiving a special surprise. Santa will be available to listen to the children’s wishes and to take photos. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Friends of the Lakes Region Library.

At Central Ridge Branch will be hosting a special “Elf Academy” on Wednesday the 12th from 4:30pm to 6pm. By joining the Elf Academy children will learn the festive skills needed to be an elf in Santa’s employ. Children will be able to show off their new skills to Santa, as well as share their holiday wishes and take photos. 

Santa will make another stop on Thursday the 13th at the Floral City Branch from 6:30pm to 8:00pm for more “Stories with Santa”. Enjoy hearing your favorite holiday stories, make reindeer food, play reindeer games, and participate in a sing-a-long with the Floral City Heritage Council carolers. Santa will be available to take photos and listen to wishes. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Floral City Library.

On Tuesday December 18th the Homosassa Branch will be transforming the building into a “Winter Wonderland” from 5pm to 7pm. There will be holiday stories to listen to, crafts to create, cookies to decorate, and carols to sing. Santa will be available for photos and to share holiday wishes. Refreshments will be made available by the Friends of the Homosassa Library.

Citrus County Fire Rescue 4th Annual Holiday Wreaths Fire Awareness Program

On December 1st, Citrus County Fire Rescue will be starting their 4th Annual Holiday Wreaths Fire Awareness program to help raise fire safety awareness for county residential homes during the holiday season. At selected fire stations the displayed holiday wreaths will start with green light bulbs and will be replaced by a red bulb, one by one, for every recorded residential fire in the CCFR jurisdiction.

The wreaths will be displayed outside at the following stations:

Station 3, 8408 West Homosassa Trail, Homosassa

Station 7, 800 N. Rock Crusher Road, Crystal River

Station 14, 9515 North Citrus Springs Blvd., Citrus Springs

Station 20, 4785 North Elkcam Blvd., Pine Ridge

County Names New Assistant County Administrator

Citrus County Board of County Commissioners approved James Mallon as the new Assistant County Administrator at their regular meeting on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. Mallon officially started his new position on Wednesday, November 14, 2018. 

With over twenty years of government experience, Mallon comes from the City of Ocean City NJ, where he served as Business Administrator managing day-to day operations of the City. His previous experience includes Borough Administrator in Pine Hill, NJ, Director of Community Services, Ocean City, NJ, and roles in the private sector managing government relations, communications and community relations. 

Mallon holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Rutgers University and a Bachelor’s degree in Law/Justice from Glassboro State College/Rowan University.

Encouraging beneficial insects

Citrus County Utilities Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program is offering a free gardening workshop on December 4, 2017 from 2:00-3:30 pm.  An important component of pest management strategies is identifying damaging insects. Many insects found in the landscape due little or no harm, while some are vital to food production.  Identifying the beneficial and pollinator visitors must be considered when applying harmful products minimizing potential damage to non-targeted pests.    Classes are held at the Citrus County Extension Service building located at 3650 W Sovereign Path in Lecanto.  Please contact Steven Davis at (352) 527-5708 to confirm your participation or use link below for registration.

Minimizing nuisance plants and pests

Citrus County Utilities Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program is offering a free gardening workshop on December 18, 2017 from 2:00-3:30 pm.  Several plant and wildlife species have been introduced to the Florida peninsula. Several species have been intentionally introduced, while others accidentally, but all causing control problems.  Let’s learn which species to be aware of and non-harmful controls being developed to control invasive populations.
