Meals-on-Wheels Pet Meals

Citrus County Meals on Wheels Pet Meals program provides food to over 400 homebound seniors each week. 20% to 30% of these clients have companion animals. These pets are the only family many of our clients have left. These animals provide unfaltering companionship to a senior who may feel completely alone.

Citrus County is dedicated to helping seniors maintain their independence and quality of life for as long as possible. It was discovered that our clients were frequently sharing the food provided by the Meals on Wheels Program with their beloved pets. Other clients were spending their already limited resources on expensive pet food, often doing without medications and other items that they themselves needed. This compromised the nutrition, health, and safety of the client and the animal.

Crystal River High School Business Academy:
"Pennies for Pets" Community Service Project

Kids with Donations

Special Thanks to the Crystal River High School Business Academy students.  They collect pennies for pets for their community service project each year.  From the money they collect they purchase dog food for our PetMeals program for our homebound Meals on Wheels clients.  Thank you so much to Melody Dobbins and all of her students who help with this project.  It is truly appreciated by our Senior citizens.  Business academy students, names left to right are:  Bryant Fernandez, Vu Pham and Shannon Hancock.  Not pictured are Gunnar Consol and Adrianna Ordiway.

The Crystal River High School Business Academy has once again had an outstanding community service project. The students of the academy and all the pet food they collected are pictured above. They chose to support Citrus County Support Services, PetMeals Program. This program provides pet food to homebound seniors receiving home delivered meals, to help feed their pets. The PetMeals Program began in 2003 with donated pet food and volunteer drivers to deliver the pet food. The program is very successful in helping many seniors.

Thank you so much to Melody Dobbins and all of her students who helped with this project. This donation will feed so many pets and really help our seniors.

Pat Coles, Director of Community Services, says, "I am proud to live in Citrus County where people care about their neighbors.
