In most circumstances you may act as your own contractor subject to statutory limitations. You will be required to read and sign an Owner/Builder Disclosure Statement.

You may obtain an application from the Citrus County Building Division that will explain in detail what is needed to secure a building permit. You can review the Residential Permitting Process and the Application Checklist which are extremely useful tools in making sure your application is complete.

A site plan must be drawn to scale, and shows all existing and proposed structures. Several other items must also be shown, and a list of these items can be found on our application checklist as well as in section 104.2.5 of the Citrus County Code.

• The three main codes enforced by the Building Division are the Florida Building Code, the National Electrical Code and the Florida Fire Prevention Code.
• If you wish to purchase hard copies of the codes, check out the Building Official’s Association of Florida (BOAF).

The penalty ranges from a civil citation to an arrest and prosecution at the State Attorney's. A first offense violation is a 3^rd degree misdemeanor. However, during a declared emergency the 1^st offense violation is a felony.
