Citrus County Students Challenged to Detect Toilet Leaks
Citrus County Utilities is hosting its 8th Annual Classroom Leak Detection Challenge for 3rd, 4th, 
and 5th grade classrooms. This annual event celebrates the EPA’s “We’re for Water” initiative by 
challenging students to test their home toilets for leaks. According to EPA Water Sense, fixing one 
leaky toilet can save up to 200 gallons a day.
All supplies are provided by the utility. For brick-and-mortar classrooms, the utility will mail 
dye tablets, student worksheets, and pencils to the school. Students working from home can 
substitute food coloring to perform the test.
As a thank you, the utility will provide shower timers to the entire class once results are 
received. Additionally, teachers that submit a class photo holding the “We’re for Water” sign will 
receive color- changing reusable water bottles.
Teachers interested in participating in the 2022 challenge should send an email to 
debra.burden@citrusbocc.com by Wednesday, April 6, 2022, including the school, teacher name, grade
