Parks & Recreation to Offer First Annual Summer Women's Fishing Workshop

As new residents settle into Citrus County, it is common for them to develop a steady interest in
learning about Florida’s flora and fauna. This interest has spurred Citrus County Parks &
Recreation to offer their first annual Women’s Fishing Workshop.
“We are excited to have the opportunity and support to bring this new program to Parks and
Recreation,” said Naturalist & Recreation Program Specialist Alice Herden. “We have a great lineup
of guests, from experienced anglers to biologists, and are confident that participants will leave
with knowledge about Florida fresh and saltwater fish, their habitats, ethics, and conservation.”
Says Herden: “Citrus County is a wonderful place to learn about marine life, because areas such as
Ozello Community Park and Fort Island Gulf Beach happen to be surrounded by beautiful estuaries,
which are important for many species of fish.”
The Women’s Fishing workshop is not just about how to fish, but also about offering participants a
broader spectrum of knowledge by learning about fish, habitats, and conservation. Each workshop
covers a different topic. At the final two workshops, registered participants will take what they
learned from the prior sessions and put it to use at the pier.
“Pier fishing is a great way for beginner anglers to learn simple aspects of fishing and become
Florida-Friendly anglers. Hernando Beach and Fort Island Trail Park are just a few popular places
for pier fishing. Our outdoor fishing experiences will review many of those aspects we learned
prior, both for freshwater and saltwater,” Alice explained.
Workshops are held on Mondays in July from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Central Ridge Community
Center in Beverly Hills. Registration is required and a $25 registration fee covers all workshop
dates. For more information about these workshops, contact Alice Herden at 352-527-7540 or
